ARCH+ Zeitschrift für Architektur und Städtebau. Am Ende: Architektur

50 Jahre ARCH+. Projekt und Utopie

The magazine was published in cooperation with Az W on the occasion of the retirement of Az W founding director Dietmar Steiner and the 50th anniversary of ARCH+. On the basis of the exhibition "In the End: Architecture" curated by Karoline Mayer, Sonja Pisarik and Katharina Ritter and the 20th Vienna Architecture Congress, it not only reviews the discourses of the last 50 years, but also uses current practices as examples to show what perspectives architecture can have as a social practice.

Description

Do people shape institutions, or is it the other way round the institution that shapes people?

Two people who have each shaped two important institutions and thus the architectural discourse of recent decades in their own way form the background to this issue’s content: Dietmar Steiner, who headed the Architekturzentrum Wien from 1993 to 2016, and Nikolaus Kuhnert, who has been standing in for ARCH+ for 45 years. Both have pursued architectural policy, but not in the sense of personal networks, but rather from the understanding that architecture is a political medium.

This issue was published in cooperation with Az W to mark Steiner’s retirement and the 50th anniversary of ARCH+, which was founded in 1967. On the basis of the exhibition ‘Am Ende: Architektur’ curated by Karoline Mayer, Sonja Pisarik and Katharina Ritter and the 20th Vienna Architecture Congress, it not only reviews the discourses of the last 50 years, but also uses current practices as examples to show what perspectives architecture can have as a social practice.
