Accompanying the 19th Vienna Architecture Congress, which took place in the context of the exhibition `Soviet Modernism 1955-1991: Unknown Stories” (08.11.2012–25.02.2013) at the Architekturzentrum Wien, the Hintergrund 54 was published. For the first time outside of Russia, the most important experts on the hitherto little researched epoch of Soviet modernism are gathered together. Architectural historians, urban planners, cultural theorists, and architects from the former Soviet republics, together with other international experts, discussed the topics “Capitalism versus Communism. Architecture of Modernity in East and West”, “The Soviet Heritage: National or Russian?”, “Local Modernism. Centrifugal Forces in the Architecture of the USSR” and “Built Ideology” from architectural-historical, political and economic perspectives.
