One of the collection’s primary tasks is to secure architectural archives. More than 100 architects’ archives from throughout Austria offer insights into the history of architecture after 1945 and constitute the largest part of the Az W collection.

Every sketch, every plan, and every model tells a story—of ideas, spaces, and the people behind them. Austria’s architectural history lives on in the premortem bequests and estates of the Architekturzentrum Wien (Az W): as an archive of visions, as a reflection of its time, and as a foundation for future construction. The premortem bequests and estates of more than 110 architects from across Austria provide insights into the nationally and internationally significant architectural history after 1945 and form the core of the Az W Collection.
The Collection encompasses the archives of key figures of modernism—from the interwar period through Austro-fascism and National Socialism to postwar modernism and the present day. In addition to design drawings, plans, photographs, and models, biographical and professional documents are acquired, revealing the material and intellectual context of the premortem bequests and estates. They illustrate the wide range of architectural approaches and planning tasks between the poles of continuity and social change.
