Reevaluation of a Legend

This book sees itself as an attempt at an urgently needed correction of traditional architectural biographies, using the example of Günther Domenig (1934–2012) and an “Homage to Many”, who had supported the genesis of his impressive and diverse oeuvre over the years.

Description

Günther Domenig‘s work reflects forty years of architectural and cultural history (1964–2004): he made vital contributions to a wide range of design positions and styles within a condensed time frame: brutalism, structuralism, organic vegetal cell structures, pop art, and de-constructivist tendencies, as well as their productive overlaps, also demonstrating his commitment to participatory and process-oriented approaches to planning and building.
This book offers a fragmented genesis of his oeuvre, primarily reconstructed from the perspective of those who contributed to the realization of these projects: partners and staff in the office and at the TU Graz, clients who, in the respective spirit of optimism, sought and found in Domenig—albeit a sometimes difficult—partner for realizing their own visions; representatives of ambitious construction companies, and students who were inspired by Günther Domenig’s work – but in return had also inspired his projects.
