Michael Thonet (1796-1871) began his experiments of curving wood in the 1830s in Boppard am Rhein. In 1849 he opened his own work shop in Vienna Gumpendorf; in 1853 he founded the “Thonet Brothers” corporation with his five sons. The exhibition shows the development of early serially manufactured furniture models, as well as designs of Austrian architects for the curved wood furniture industry from the “Vienna Modern Period” in 1900 until today (Otto Wagner, Adolf Loos, Josef Hoffmann, Josef Frank, Oswald Haerdtl, Roland Rainer, Ernst W. Beranek and Hermann Czech).
