The district heating plant in Spittelau provides a striking focal point in the midst of a transport hub, where major rail and road transport routes intersect and interweave. There is also space here for pedestrians, cyclists and even swimmers.
For over 100 years, the intersection of the Danube Canal, the district heating network and transport infrastructure in Spittelau have provided a striking example of visible technical systems within the urban landscape. The waste incineration plant by Friedensreich Hundertwasser serves both as a central hub for Vienna’s district heating network and as a colourful landmark. For over a century, in the immediate vicinity, the underground and overground railway lines, roads, bridges and riverside areas have merged into a fabric that transforms the mobility of a major city into a spatially tangible and architecturally compelling system.
