Light is cast on the historical development of housing on the basis of two exhibitions currently on show at the Architekturzentrum Wien. The idea of the Siedlerbewegung (lit. ‘settlers’ movement’), the building of the Werkbundsiedlung and the achievements of Red Vienna in the housing sector are compared and contrasted with innovative contemporary concepts for housing that call for an interaction between the building and nature, architecture and countryside.
In the subsequent practical exercise we look at the idea of the garden city and build our own garden estate according to Loos’ development plan.
