The exhibition explores the Hollein phenomenon from a contemporary perspective. A reappraisal of Hollein’s work is undertaken in dialogue with the positions of a younger generation of architects, placing his oeuvre in a context of the current discourse.

Hans Hollein, a self-proclaimed avantgardist in the 1960s, is the only Austrian architect to have been awarded the Pritzker Prize. He was also a meticulous curator of his own work throughout his life. While during his lifetime his personality often overshadowed the reception of his work, now, almost a decade after his death in 2014, this work can be viewed with the distance of time. In ‘Hollein Calling’ groundbreaking projects by Hans Hollein are juxtaposed with current projects from 15 European architectural offices whose work is shaping the discourse today. The Hollein exponents — sketches, models, prototypes and documents — have been selected from the extremely extensive ‘Archive Hans Hollein, Az W and MAK, Vienna’, which has been several years in the processing at the Az W.
