School buildings have to meet new requirements, both typologically and pedagogically. What space should and can schools provide today? This event highlights the relevance of educational buildings in the current edition of the Mies van der Rohe Award, and presents two buildings from the shortlist.

Simona Della Rocca, BDR bureau: Enrico Fermi School, Turin (IT) 2019
As part of an extremely successful conversion, a school from the 1960s was adapted to meet current educational needs and opened up to the city. The outdoor areas and entrances were rearranged and partly transformed into green spaces, while additional integrated programmes, including a cafeteria and library, are available for local activities.

Hemma Fasch, fasch&fuchs. architekten: Neustift School Campus, Neustift im Stubaital (AT) 2019
In the single-storey campus with green roof terraces, exterior and interior spaces interweave to form an impressive landscaped carpet that cascades into the surroundings. All learning areas allow direct access to the outdoor area, creating space to develop freely.
