For several decades Brutalist buildings have been vilified as architectural eyesores, and torn down or left to decay. Does the current hype herald a reversal in this trend?

The Az W presents the first survey of Brutalist buildings completed between 1953 and 1979, originally shown at the Deutsches Architekturmuseum in Frankfurt.

Unusually large cardboard models and small, sculptural concrete models convey the fascination and quality of Brutalist architecture.

Specially for Vienna, the extensive collection of the Architekturzentrum Wien has enabled us to add a section to the exhibition covering 10 highlights of Austrian Brutalism on the basis of original materials.

A cooperation by the Deutsches Architekturmuseum and the Wüstenrot Stiftung, with a focus on Austria added by the Architekturzentrum Wien.

Speakers:

Angelika Fitz, Director Az W

Peter Cachola Schmal, Director Deutsches Architekturmuseum

Oliver Elser, Curator SOS Brutalism

Sonja Pisarik, Curator Focus on Austria

Andreas Mailath-Pokorny, Executive Councillor for Culture, Science and Sports
