Building Books

A Lecture to accompany the exhibition "Idea and Phenomena. Steven Holl"

Fri 14.06.2002, 19:00-21:00

Lecture by Lars Müller

In his lecture ’Building Books’, being held to accompany the exhibition ’Idea And Phenomena. Steven Holl’, the designer and publisher Lars Müller presents a selection of books on architecture and design distinguished by the care and quality of their production, for which the publishing house has earned an international reputation.

In Building Books – the interweaving of form and content in the book design – Lars Müller sees similarities to the architect’s working process: In both disciplines a successful result depends upon a balance between function and form, the sweeping gesture and small details. The foundation and the facade have their equivalents in book design.

Furthermore, like architecture, a book stands for its time, it often has a long life and is accessible to many people. The lecture outlines different types of books and provides an insight into the design process behind selected publications, for example: Peter Zumthor – Häuser, R. Buckminster Fuller – Your Private Sky, Idea And Phenomena. Steven Holl, Jasper Morrison – Everything But The Walls. These books aim to appeal equally to designers, architects and bibliophiles.
