The issue of humane housing for displaced persons has not been clearly addressed despite the end of the discussion on the Eberau first-stop take-up centre for refugees — on the contrary, following a socio-political debate that was not held along pragmatic lines the project, which was dropped, left almost all of the relevant issues unresolved.
How can a practical approach to providing humanitarian aid be found outside a stigmatising political debate? What are the existing functional approaches to solutions for the basic need for housing? Is an integrative policy for refugees a luxury? Can we have a constructive social policy based on functional concepts for space?
Following a talk by Ute Bock — founder of and driving force behind the Flüchtlingsprojekt Ute Bock, which now runs over 70 homes, Heidi Pretterhofer and Dieter Spath, “arquitectos”/architects, present the urban development study “Macondo, Flüchtlingsdorf am Stadtrand von Wien” (Macondo refugee village on the periphery of Vienna). This presentation is followed by a round of discussions on aspects of housing for refugees, with Ute Bock, Barbara Holub, Architektengruppe transparadiso, Karl Langer/architect of the neunerHaus home for homeless senior citizens, Charles Ofoedu, author, and Peter Scheifinger/ architect of the “In der Wiesen Interethnic Neighbourhood”. The discussion is moderated by the culture theorist Elke Krasny.
