In the Tracks of the Tunnel Boring Machine

The U2 is extending to the south, and will run to Matzleinsdorfer Platz at the end of the first phase of expansion: as part of the 2026 Architekturtage, we take an early look into the tunnel tubes of the U2/19 section, under construction at the future Reinprechtsdorfer Strasse underground station.

Users of public transport in the 5th district have mainly relied on bus routes, until now. This is to change radically with the extension of the underground beyond the Wienfluss. What will is needed before the trains can travel through the underground tunnels? What do these crucial infrastructure components look like, which we no longer notice in the darkness when sitting comfortably in the underground carriages? We embark on a journey through those hidden and highly efficient structures of a major city that make it possible for us to move through it faster than with any other means of transport.
