8th Vienna Architecture Congress

The 8th Vienna Architecture Congress leaves the traditional paths of the architectural conferences organized by the Vienna Architecture Center. The past seven congresses were dedicated to exploring the state of the art in contemporary architecture and topical issues of urban planning.

With “Architecture and Publishing”, we move on for the first time to the meta-level of addressing the problem of communicating architecture as such. The general theme of the coming Vienna Architectural Congress is not an insider debate of architecture and urban planning, but conditions and strategies of architecture’s media presence and `mediability’.

20th-century architecture has always been linked with certain publishing channels and strategies. Traditional architectural magazines saw themselves as ideological strongholds of basic architectural positions, and fundamental debates on architectural theory also took place in, and were publicized over, special media.

Architectural publications used to comprise only those specialized magazines or books written for, and mainly read by, architects. What was perhaps considered beyond that was the kind of architectural criticism that established itself in the daily press. Meanwhile, the situation has become more complex and more confused. Architecture is on the rise in the media. And architectural publications have gained a footing in many new markets and media. Classical architectural magazines do still exist, but aside from those, in addition to that, information on architecture can also be found in general-interest and in lifestyle magazines.

Thus, the field of architectural publishing includes media for internal debates of architectural theory as well as service publications informing about the profession, promotions media, and mass-market publications on architecture. We would therefore like to take the 8th Vienna Architecture Congress as an occasion to present and discuss the whole range of architectural publishing today.
