Our cities are kept running by temporary structures.

Temporary structures such as scaffolding, road barriers, sunshade nets and sandbags are a direct response to changing needs. In contrast to the lengthy processes involved in the development of architecture, they are erected quickly and, while appearing lightweight, they need to be precisely positioned and stable. They have to withstand wind and weather, and often serve their intended purpose for many years. In the exhibition ‘Temporary. Structures of Necessity’ we explore these fascinating constructions forming a silent layer of infrastructure that can be easily assembled, adapted and dismantled. Such temporary structures could take on new significance in the face of climate change, in particular. Then we get hands-on: using ingenious knotting techniques, we’ll work together to build a makeshift structure that provides shade from the sun.
