How do tradition, modernism and the future engage each other? How does architecture influence our daily lives? Around the turn of the previous century the housing situation in Vienna’s tenement buildings was catastrophic, millions of workers had come to Vienna as a result of the industrial revolution. The housing policy of Red Vienna made a major contribution to radically improving housing conditions. Using various floor plan types as a basis, the innovations introduced to housing at that time are discussed and compared with our present-day housing needs and conditions. In the practical part that follows we confront the task of building on a vacant site in the centre of Vienna and design a 1:100 scale model of our project.
