A new neighbourhood, called Sophie7, has been created on the site of the former Sophien Hospital, which opened in 1881 and closed in 2015. The 1.3 hectare site now provides 222 affordable flats, as well as cultural and educational facilities and space for community and leisure activities.
Having been closed for so long, the centrally located hospital grounds have now been reopened with a public park and facilities for people attending the adult education centre, nursery school children and members of the pensioners’ club. The two listed pavilions have been renovated and adapted for use as restaurants, venues for events, cultural institutions and co-working spaces. A number of the existing buildings have been preserved, and a new ten-storey building has significantly increased the density of the area. The new Sophienpark forms a green oasis of calm in the vicinity of the Westbahnhof station.
