Architects’ archives and conversations with contemporaries change the way architectural history is viewed: Processes, cooperations and the conditions of architectural production emerge from behind the image of the individual genius.
The reassesment of Günther Domenig’s work (1934–2012) in the context of the times is at the centre of this discussion. An updated biography shows his work to be the product of a collaborative process with investors, employees, the clients and craftsmen. The research of the material at the Az W from his archive – which includes sketches, correspondence and project documentation – as well as discussions with others close to the architect provide a glimpse behind the scenes of everyday office life and the construction process that opens up the familiar notion of one man’s unique signature to reveal a collective practice.
