Porträtköpfe Architekt*innen
The core of the Encyclopedia comprises approximately 1,050 entries on architects active in Vienna between 1770 and 1945. These are based on a research project funded by the Austrian Science Fund (FWF) (2003–2013).*
The Encyclopedia of Architects provides a concise overview of the most important data on each architect. In addition to birth and death dates and places, it includes information on family background, education, and professional career. Memberships in associations, awards, and honors are also recorded, as such information often offers a deeper insight into the life circumstances of the respective architect.
Beyond personal data, the individual stylistic approach is described, the most important completed buildings and outstanding unrealized projects are listed, and bibliographic references are given.
The aim is to characterize the work of each architect within the context of their biographical background and to present a historical appreciation of their architectural achievements.
The 2003–2013 base study was a research project funded by the FWF – Austrian Science Fund.
