Donaustadt is still home to numerous horticultural businesses, while it is also Vienna’s fastest-growing district. Since the beginning of the year, there are 360 new subsidised apartments in the centre of Kagran that were built using a hybrid timber construction method, and incorporate the motif of the greenhouse.

Designed by the architecture firms GERNER GERNER PLUS. and AllesWirdGut, Rote Emma has created a vibrant neighbourhood featuring new homes, shared gardens and multipurpose rooms. The gender-sensitive design, flexible floor plans, and a reduced building depth that ensures the apartments are generously lit are particularly worthy of mention here. Distinctive balconies and rooftop terraces with gable-roofed pergolas that echo the greenhouses of the local horticulture provide weather-protected spaces for gardening.
