Architecture in Focus

Ringmappe mit vielen Folien und großformatigen Dias

Dia-Ablageblätter im Margherita Spiluttini Fotoarchiv

With the holdings of photographers Karin Mack and Margherita Spiluttini, the collection preserves two key figures in twentieth-century Austrian architectural photography. Together, their oeuvres offer a multifaceted perspective on architectural representation—between documentation, interpretation, and artistic reflection.

The fact that women have been able to leave a visible mark on architectural photography has structural reasons. Even in the interwar period, photography—in contrast to the academically dominated field of architecture—offered a comparatively open professional area for women, especially for Jewish female photographers in Vienna’s urban environment. As a freelance profession, it enabled them to achieve artistic and economic self-confidence—and opened new perspectives on architecture as a social, cultural, and political space.
