With Austria’s most comprehensive architecture collection, the Architekturzentrum Wien (Az W) preserves the country’s cultural heritage and makes it accessible for future research. This not only concerns aesthetic questions, but also social and historical contexts.

“A treasure trove of sources for architecture. A refuge for architecture. A collective consciousness of architecture.” (Inkarie Lackner)

The Az W Collection encompasses objects related to architecture, urban planning, landscape architecture, design, and civil engineering from the beginning of the twentieth century to the present day. The range extends from realized buildings and utopian visions to fabric designs and furniture pieces, as well as urban planning studies. The focus is on Austrian architecture after 1945.
In addition to the architectural-historical relevance of the work and the architect, supra-regional and transnational issues, as well as historical and cultural-political developments play a central role in the collection strategy. Materials are collected that, beyond their architectural-historical significance, can illuminate socio-political discourses. We see our Collection as a repository of knowledge about architecture, offering future generations a well-founded insight into the architectural history of Austria.

The Az W Collection comprises the following holdings:
