Im Zusammenhang mit Schlagworten wie Globalisierung, internationale Vernetzung, beschleunigtes Wachstum hat sich die asiatische Metropole in den letzten Jahren als ein neuer Schwerpunkt in der Urbanismusdebatte herauskristallisiert. Der Verdichtungs- und Wachstumsdruck in den Städten, hervorgerufen durch den rasanten wirtschaftlichen Aufstieg Ostasiens bietet breite Projektionsflächen für Visionen der Erneuerung, die sowohl mit dem Mythos des Unbekannten und Exotischen als auch mit Angst behaftet sind.

Der 7. Wiener Architektur Kongress wirft einen anderen Blick auf die Kulturen, Traditionen, deren Einflüsse auf die historischen Entwicklungen und die sozialen Strukturen des Alltags in der asiatischen Stadt. Er diskutiert die Auswirkungen von direkten und indirekten Einflüssen der Kolonialisierung und des Umgangs mit kultureller Identität. Notwendige Neupositionierungen im Ost-West Konflikt stehen ebenso im Mittelpunkt wie Fragen der Grenzziehung zwischen Öffentlich und Privat/Innen- und Aussenraum und der Rolle von Architektur und Massenkultur als Kontrollinstrument.

Im Zusammenhang mit Schlagworten wie Globalisierung, internationale Vernetzung, beschleunigtes Wachstum hat sich die asiatische Metropole in den letzten Jahren als ein neuer Schwerpunkt in der Urbanismusdebatte herauskristallisiert. Während TheoretikerInnen und ArchitektInnen bei der nordamerikanischen und europäischen Stadt teilweise bereits von „verlorener Urbanität“ sprechen und die zunehmende Suburbanisierung bei gleichzeitiger „Disneyisierung“ der Kernstädte beklagen, bietet sich die asiatische Metropole als neues Modell, als teils bedrohliche, teils hoffnungsvolle Herausforderung für das 21. Jahrhundert an. Flirrende Bilder von überbevölkerten, scheinbar chaotischen, ständig wuchernden urbanen Strukturen fügen sich gut in die Millenniumseuphorie der westlichen Welt.

Der Verdichtungs- und Wachstumsdruck in den Städten, hervorgerufen durch den rasanten wirtschaftlichen Aufstieg Ostasiens bietet breite Projektionsflächen für Visionen der Erneuerung, die sowohl mit dem Mythos des Unbekannten und Exotischen als auch mit Angst behaftet sind. Das Entstehen von neuen, florierenden Wirtschafts- und Finanzzentren bringt auch eine dynamische Kulturproduktion mit sich, die sich zunehmend internationalisiert. Importierte Versatzstücke der asiatischen Kunst und Kultur sind längst ein selbstverständlicher Bestandteil unseres „hippen“, städtischen Alltags geworden, Produkte ethnischer Tradition werden unter der verallgemeinernden Marke des „Fernöstlichen“ zu Konsumgütern, kulinarischen Logos und glamourösen Images absorbiert.

Der 7. Wiener Architektur Kongress wirft einen anderen Blick auf die Kulturen, Traditionen, deren Einflüsse auf die historischen Entwicklungen und die sozialen Strukturen des Alltags in der asiatischen Stadt. Er diskutiert die Auswirkungen von direkten und indirekten Einflüssen der Kolonialisierung und des Umgangs mit kultureller Identität. Notwendige Neupositionierungen im Ost-West Konflikt stehen ebenso im Mittelpunkt wie Fragen der Grenzziehung zwischen Öffentlich und Privat/Innen- und Aussenraum und der Rolle von Architektur und Massenkultur als Kontrollinstrument.

ArchitektInnen und TheoretikerInnen präsentieren 5 unterschiedliche Städte, geben einen Einblick in die Vielfalt Asiens, nähern sich dem Phänomen der Geschwindigkeit, der Dichte, der Maximen und der Traditionen.
