In April last year the Architekturzentrum Wien opened the Az West in the former Prodomo building on Flachgasse in the 15th District of Vienna as a venue for exhibitions on emerging Austrian architecture. After only 10 months' of operation the location has been shut down again.
Statement by Dietmar Steiner, director of the Az W: "We wanted to send a signal to culture policy decision-makers with the Az West and provide the dynamic and internationally celebrated emerging Austrian architecture scene with a platform for specially conceived experimental exhibitions showing the development of content in Austrian architecture, and contribute on a cultural level to the development of local policy with the location itself. The Az W neither applied for nor received any funding either from the state or from the City of Vienna. The Az West project was an initiative to contribute to culture policy made possible by implementing in-house savings and redeploying the resources available."
Due to the sustained cutbacks in grants from the City of Vienna combined with the unjustified withholding of running costs by the MQ, the Az W board of directors has been compelled to order the interim closure of the Az West as well as drastic cutbacks in the overall programme, with immediate effect.
The Az W deeply regrets the termination of operations at the Az West showcase for exhibitions along with other planned activities, and hopes to be able to report a more positive development in the near future.
