When the Architekturzentrum Wien was founded in 1993 the presentation of architecture was its primary concern. As its name suggests creating a museum of architecture was not a consideration at that time. Nevertheless, today the Az W fulfils all the functions of a classical museum i.e. collecting, preserving and researching. The Archives and Collection of the Architekturzentrum Wien consist of
The estates of various Austrian architects The collection of individual projects The Achleitner Archives The lack in Austria of an institution dealing exclusively with architecture is shown not only by the wide range of exhibitions offered but also in the growing number of requests made to the Az W to assume responsibility for collected material, in particular' architects' estates.
That the archives and collection should function solely as a kind of knowledge store that preserves history in the form of individual beautiful drawings is today no longer a tenable concept. The documentation of and research into architecture in its entire complexity is the central concern of the Az W collection. On the one hand its episodic character accurately conveys the fragmentary actual state of the Az W"s stock, while on the other the collection reacts to the changes in the circumstances of architecture, to its changed perception, position and significance.
Both archives and collection are an important aspect of the Az W as a centre of competence, which, as a cultural service industry, plays both a local and international role. The long-term goal is the establishment of a collection of "Austrian architecture of the 20th and 21st centuries”.
Collection, estates, material from the archives by appointment only (to be made in writing/email or by telephone)
